What You're Made For: Powerful Life Lessons from My Career in Sports by George Raveling and Ryan Holiday: This book by George Raveling reminds me of the parallel between competitive sports and entrepreneurship. It’s a blend of sports wisdom and life lessons, drawing from the author’s experiences as a coach spanning decades. Ryan Holiday is one of my favorite authors, so his input in this book helps the story flow well. Through personal stories, the book offers insights on perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and achieving one’s full potential. I read this book at just the right time, as I have started approaching professional athletes in helping about helping them build their business brand on LinkedIn.
There are so many lessons one can take from athletic pursuit, and bring it to the business world, and that doesn’t necessarily mean starting your own business, (but those learned traits certainly help). Some of the takeaway lessons from this book include resilience wins the game, and that overcoming setback is a major key to success. Teamwork and leadership matter, and that lessons from the field often translate into life and business. And that hard work beats talent; consistency and discipline lead to long-term success. Of particular note is the importance of coaching, and how transformational it is in actualizing human potential. One of the overriding themes in the book, both in Raveling’s own life as an athlete and a coach, is the will to win. He saw that relentless drive firsthand in coaching legends like Michael Jordan. The winner’s mindset. After being at SXSW, and hearing this from a number of panelists, I am not sure if this is a mindset that can be taught. Some people have that drive as part of their DNA, and they bring that energy to every challenge. You either really want it, or you don’t.
Generally, I think autobiographies and biographies, where the writer shares their journey, and lessons learned are some of the most valuable books out there. As much as we like to believe that our current situation is so unique, someone with much more stacked against them (in the author’s case, poverty, racism, and being an orphan) is able to push through, and accomplish amazing things. So, no more excuses, go and read this book.
