October 7th
Never forgotten. Never the same.
Welcome back to YKC. Upon remembering October 7th, it was the day they tried to destroy our spirit. Every day since has proven they couldn’t.
My thoughts are with the victims and families of those killed and injured in the Manchester terror attack... may their memory be a blessing.
With negotiations underway, the coming days will be critical, and our resolve remains unshaken until every hostage is home.

Hard Lessons from the Hurt Business: Boxing and the Art of Life by Ed Latimore: The warrior-philosopher, and a real modern-day Stoic. Seriously one of the most under the radar thinkers out there. I’ve been a fan of his work since his first book: Not Caring What Other People Think Is A Superpower: Insights From a Heavyweight Boxer. He’s definitely a contradiction in that he has held so many different (and opposing) views, and been a part of different communities, but the principles he writes and speaks about are very practical today.
Us humans are so fallible, and often victims to our environment and upbringing. I’m not justifying being a victim (which is so popular these days online), but there are factors in our environment that are so strong they pull us back. The author did not have an easy life, and even once he was able to generate an opportunity he fell off… but once he hit rock bottom, he bounced back, and kept going. We often think of success as this hockey stick chart of one good decision after another… but the reality is that we make mistakes all the time. In the book, he almost got wiped out a few times, so I’d like to hope as we age and learn from experience, the risks we take (and we must continue to take risks to grow), are measured, and not reckless. While a lot of this book is about boxing, you don’t need to be a sports fan to appreciate the lessons. If the book only covered boxing, there are plenty of analogies and quotes from the sport that are fitting for dealing with life’s adversities. The author also struggles with alcoholism, and this addiction significantly trips him up on many occasions along his journey.
If you have a young person in your life who is struggling to find themselves, this is a good and very readable book to gift them. If anything, the author is an example of how someone can overcome so many obstacles to eventually self-actualize, and can serve an inspiration.
