Welcome back to YKC. The horrors of Oct 7th changed everyone around me. A year later we’re still struggling with this trauma. I am a rational optimist, but even I have challenging days, and yesterday was one of them. In remembering all those who were murdered on October 7th, may their memory be a blessing.
For those still being held hostage… Bring Them Home Now.
If you’re attending Money 20/20 later this month, and would like to connect at the show respond to this email directly (I will most likely be writing a piece on startups at the event).

The end of the post-Holocaust era by Yossi Klein Halevi: What can be said or written that has not already been addressed… We will look back at this era, which will be remembered by the individual stories of those who faced this horror, and understand that we changed. The world changed. But though this situation was thrust upon us, many heroes emerged as well. Though they tried to take our humanity away from us, so many brave individuals paid the ultimate price in fighting the onslaught.
For people who are not Jewish, this date will probably never hold the same significance it does, and even a year later we still feel that dread and pit in our stomach. I remember listening to the radio a few months after 9/11 and the announcer asking if we would ever be able to get back to “normal”. We did, so much so that we have some in a generation empathizing with Osama Bin Laden on TikTok. Time played its part, but I don’t know if we’ll ever be the same. I personally, felt a part of me die on Oct 7th, that I could never truly feel joy as I once did, knowing such evil was unleashed upon us. And I believe that pain will continue for years to come, though we will eventually find a lull in this war (and it is a regional war), and start to heal from this trauma. Yes, it’s politics as well, and there will eventually be elections in Israel, where I believe an outpouring of rage at those who were asleep at the wheel (whether by chance or choice), will help in the healing process. It will close one chapter, so we can open a new more optimistic one.
But I’m a rational optimist, and as an example, people who survived the Holocaust went on to live long and fulfilling lives. We can look no further then the heroes who fought like lions on Oct 7th, and still continue to defend Israel’s borders. Though this period is extremely challenging the next generation of leaders will emerge from this chaos. We’ll look back at this period and grieve, but also understand that we are living through extraordinary times, and that history is now being shaped.
